Self Hosted WordPress VS Blogger
Key Features | Self Hosted WordPress | Blogger |
Cost | WordPress Software is free but you will have to pay for purchasing the domain and web hosting to create a self-hosted site. | Blogger is free. You do not need to pay a single penny. |
Domain Ownership | You will own your domain. E.g. CatchUpdates.com | You will not own your domain. E.g. abc.blogspot.in |
Hosting Ownership | You decide your hosting provider to host your own site. You are free to decide when to change it or how long you want to run it and when you want to shut it down. You own all your data, and you control what information you share with any third party | Blogger provides hosting on Google Server. Though it is free and reliable but Google keeps the right to shut it down or restrict your access to it at any time. It is not owned by you. |
Extension | WordPress is open-source software. There are thousands of WordPress plugins allowing you to modify and extend the default feature set. | Blogger provides very limited tools allowing you to perform only specific tasks on your website. |
User Interface | WordPress has thousands of free and premium WordPress themes that allow you to create professional-looking websites. You can find plenty of themes specific to your niche and all are easily customizable and editable. | Blogger by default only provides a limited set of templates to use. You can modify the colors and layout of these templates using the built-in tools, but you cannot create your own layouts or make modifications. |
SEO | WordPress is more useful in doing SEO. It provides a lot of SEO related plugins(such as WordPress SEO by Yoast, All in One SEO Pack, Platinum SEO Pack) to help to improve your website | Blogger does not provide any such extending ability for better SEO. |
Security | Though the WordPress site is quite secure, only you are responsible for security and backups. There are plenty of WordPress security plugins that make it easier for you. | Blogger has the upper edge in this. Using Blogger you have the added advantage of Google’s robust secure platform. You don’t need to worry about managing your server’s resources, securing your blog, or creating backups. |
Content | You are the owner of your content. | Google is free to use and distribute your content. |

Conclusion of Self Hosted WordPress VS Blogger
It is best to make the correct decision in the beginning and not have to make some big changes to your site a year in. Making big changes after your site has been established might mean a loss of search engine rankings and/or a drop in traffic so making the correct decision at the start is important.
If web hosting and yearly domain costs fit in your budget, WordPress is absolutely the best choice. If you have aspirations of becoming a professional blogger or making a sizable income from your blog, a self-hosted WordPress blog is the best option.
