What are Two Tier Affiliate Programs?
In usual Affiliate marketing/programs, the affiliate marketers earn commissions for all the LEADS OR SALES THEY GENERATE. You can consider it as a 1st tier commission. The Two Tier programs are one step ahead of this conventional affiliate marketing approach. In two-tier model, the first tier of commission is just like in the usual affiliate program plus it adds one more commission tier where affiliate marketers also earn commissions on LEADS OR SALES GENERATED BY PEOPLE THEY REFERRED TO THE PROGRAM. Confused?
Let’s take an example. Say Affiliate X uses a two tier affiliate program link to refer another Affiliate Y. Now, Y promotes the products/services provided by the affiliate program and generates a sale, so as usual Y will earn a commission but here Affiliate X will also earn a commission as he had referred Affiliate Y.
Now, you understand that here you will not only earn for the conversions you generate but also from the conversions of marketers/webmasters you referred. Isn’t it wonderful? 🙂 Two-tier commission will not be as high as of 1st tier commission, but it is an add-on to generate more money (passive income) without doing much work. (The commission rates vary for different programs)

Two Tier affiliate programs are a good way to generate passive income without much effort. If it is done properly, you can earn a decent amount of money. But, I must also say that though two-tier marketing looks attractive, it is not that easy to implement and get success in this. We cannot just promote a two tier program, refer some affiliates, and expect they would provide a lot of conversions and bring you a chunk of commission. You will have to accept the fact that only 5-10% of sub-affiliates will only be able to convert leads and sales. The reason is – other affiliates will also think to refer and create a network of their affiliates to earn them a commission and no one will actually put effort to promote the products on their own. Sad, but true!
So, the key strategy to succeed in two tier affiliate marketing is that you will need to do the work yourself too. Put your best efforts into promoting the products and mention the approach you use for your promotions so that your sub-affiliates can also follow the same. Another suggestion I would give will be – to choose quality over quantity. Do not blindly follow hundreds of affiliate programs just because they have a two-tier model. Choose only those programs (products/services) that you trust and will not hesitate to recommend to others.
