What to do after 10th : Diploma or +2 Non Medical ?

This is the critical question that comes to every student who is going to pass his matriculation. Many of my own knowns have asked me the same question – What to do after 10th : Diploma or +2 Non Medical ? I have also done a diploma cum degree from Chandigarh College Of Engineering & Technology ( Panjab University).  So I opted to write an article on it and wanted to share my views about it with you all.

Before starting, I would like to mention that a diploma is not equivalent to the degree (in case if someone is in confusion with it). Now coming to our main point, there is a vast difference between the diploma and 12th with non-medical. +2 is the general line and if you want to go for various types of graduation courses(not specifically for Engineering) then you can go for +2 with non-medical because after completion of 12th with non-medical, you can go for any type of field.

Whereas Diploma is the specialized field and technical study which is to be done after 10th. 10th is mandatory to do the diploma. You must have completed your 10th with more than 50% marks under some recognized university or board. Then after you will be eligible for the diploma.

Diploma or +2 Non Medical

+2 has only four streams that are:
1. Non-Medical
2. Medical
3. Arts
4. Commerce

Whereas a diploma can be done in any of the following streams. The various streams in the diploma are:

1) Diploma in Nursing
2) Diploma in Engineering
3) Diploma in Fashion Designing
4) Diploma in Interior Designing
5) Diploma in Journalism

And the list goes on…

For only engineering, there are also various streams of the diploma. The streams are:

  1. Computer science engineering
  2. Information technology
  3. Civil Engineering
  4. Mechanical Engineering
  5. Aeronautical Engineering
  6. Food technology
  7. Biotechnology
  8. Electrical Engineering
  9. Electronics and Communication Engineering
  10. Nanotechnology
    and the list goes on….

I hope now you all are familiar with diploma or +2 Non Medical.

If you want to do Engineering and are confused between Diploma or +2 Non Medical, read following key points carefully:

1)    You will have to do six-year study ( after 10th) in both cases to become Engineer-

Diploma : 3 years

Degree:  3 years ( You will get admission in 2nd year directly)

                   OR

+2 Non Medical : 2 years

Degree: 4 years

2)    Diploma in Engineering will provide you the foundation for Engineering and will almost cover all the subjects related to a particular stream which you choose i.e if you select Diploma you will cover all the subjects ( in basics) that you will be doing in degree.

On the contrary, if you select +2 non-medical, you will study Intermediate consists of PCM(Physics, Chemistry, Maths), Bi.P.C(Physics, Chemistry, Biology), Commerce,.etc which is of a two-year course.

Conclusion: Completing a diploma is definitely advantageous because if you complete the diploma in a particular stream then graduation in the particular stream will be very easy. Usually, diploma and +2 courses will be treated equally but diploma definitely has got an upper hand.

3)    If you belong to a middle-class family and your parents can not afford to give you a higher study than you should do Diploma as on the basis of Diploma even you can get a job easily ( Many of my own friends got selected in many renowned companies: IBM, AMW, L&T, Godrej). You can do part-time degree A.M.I.E.(Associate Member of The Institution of Engineers India).

4)    If you are good at studies and have the ability to get the good AIEEE(All India Engineering Entrance Examination ) Rank, then I would suggest you go for the +2 Non-Medical. After giving the AIEEE exam you have a lot of colleges waiting to give you admission. But in the case of Diploma, there are limited colleges that follow LEET(Lateral Entry Entrance Test), a test that allows you to take admission in 2nd year directly. However some colleges do not take the LEET test, they just consider the diploma percentage and make merits entirely on diploma percentage.

5)    There is also a slightly different impact on your resumes of these two branches. If you have firstly done in a specific stream and then you have done the degree in that stream, obviously you will have an edge on ones who have done +2 non-medical and has studied PCM ( Physics, Chemistry, Math). You will have more practical knowledge ( as you have also to make live projects in the diploma as well) and the interviewer will consider this. But this coin does not work every time. Some companies prefer +2 to Diploma. For them +2 matters more.

6)    If you are not sure what line you want to choose in the future, prefer to do +2, not the diploma, as you will get two years more to decide your line in which you are interested.

Advice: Listen to everyone, But do what your heart says. I too was approached by many friends to drop the idea of a diploma and do the +2 Nonmedical.  But I did not. And I am happy with my decision, I got the job in a top IT company.

I have listed out many key points. The choice is yours. Things change a lot respective to the college you are getting admission. Try to get admission in good and higher colleges.

I hope this article on Diploma or +2 Non Medical will be beneficial to you. If you have any suggestions, feedback, or experience, you can share it with our readers. All you have to do is to comment below.

Good luck everyone  🙂

  • Hi,
Mr. Mohit arora i want to know that according to your own experience which college is good for me ccet chandigarh or ssgruc hosiarpur .
I have completed my diploma from mechanical and now i want to continue my studies

    • Hi Yogesh,

As per my experience, I would say CCET is better than SSGPURC. Earlier SSGPURC used to have a joint placement with UIET, then there were good chances of placements. But for past few years, it is not happening due to some controversies. Also, CCET got more campus drives than SSGPURC for last few years, so it would be better if you can get CCET. If you have contacts in those colleges, you can check the current scenarios there, it will help you to take your decision.
      All the best :)

  • Sir im omkar from bangalore im not good at studying im expecting 65+ percent in exams i am extremly weak in mathematics so decided not to go for non medical im left with diploma plz suggest me a stream with least mathematics and high scope (ps-there are many colleages here fr degree direct 2nd year so thats not a problem) waiting for your reply sir Awesome article

    • Hi Omkar, I would suggest you to choose stream in which you are interested (I have seen many cases where students quits in between and drop one year). As far as mathematics is concern, Mechanical and Civil you will have mostly numericals subjects and few theory subjects. Computer and ECE have mostly theory subjects. Though in computer you will have programming also (Till you are in college (diploma as well as degree),programming is basic level).

If you want to know about CSE course/difficulty level/job scope, I can explain you as I have also done in CS. For other stream I may not be able to explain. You will need to ask someone who has done these streams.

Let me know if you have any further doubts. If you want to discuss it offline you can mail me at admin@catchupdates.com.
      Thanks !

    • Hi Yash, What will be the benefits of doing this ? Now as you have started doing diploma, I would suggest you to concentrate on this and get as much practical knowledge as you can and get Lateral entry in degree in good reputed college. As after this, your knowledge will only matter in placements.

  • Hello sir,
I have just completed my SSC exams.I am expecting 95 % in the exams.i wish to become a computer engineer and i m bit confused whether to take diploma or science. Many people are suggesting for science but I think diploma can give me more practical knowledge. Please suggest me whether to go for diploma or not ? many are telling that diploma is not for toppers. Is it so?

    • Hi Kaushal,

Yes you are right that diploma can give you better practical knowledge if you are sure you want to do Computer Engineering only. As you will be studying same subjects in Diploma (Basics) and will be doing 2 months industrial training and then working on few live projects. So overall you will have a good exposure to CS concepts and Programming.

Coming to other part, your friends are partly correct Diploma is not for toppers. If you thing you can do well...go and crack AIEEE and get good colleges( eg IITs). That will be better than doing diploma. Also after doing diploma you will have only selected colleges to join as Few colleges allow LEET(Lateral Entry to 2nd year directly).

Rest is on you How you take things :)

Let me know if you need any other details :)

  • Hello sir,
I would like to know whether I should gofor dioloma or +2 if iwant to do civil engineering plz suggest

    • Hey Jash, if u r gud at studies …go for +2 and crack AIEEE and try for higher institutions like IITs ….as if u go for diploma..u will b left with only limited colleges (as few colleges have LEET ) ,though after diploma u will have all basic practical knowledge of degree subjects but u may not get higher colleges in LEET…and very few companies concern with whether u hv done diploma or +2…all they need is practical knowledge and the one who can easily adapt to their new technologies they deal with. But few govt jobs ask for +2. Rest u can discuss with ur family and have their views also :)

  • Hello sir em sarthak I had secured 82% in ICSE board now em studying in APS science stream .but em not happy with this , i love computers and em sure that i will continue with engg. computer science . i have completed my 11th but still em ready to loose one year for diploma engg in computer science because my 11th marst are not at all good as well as i loves computer . sir plz suggest me what should i do .plz sir email me at choulovesit@gmail.com . i would be ever gracefull if you do so . em waiting for your reply.

    • Hi Sarthak, I would suggest you to follow your interest and choose the line where you can enjoy your job and future without any regrets. Though it is very difficult to drop one year, I would advise you to have a conversation with your parents regarding this and then come to any point. Before this if you want to know about what you will be doing in Computer science diploma or degree and what options you will have then I may help you in stating that. Looking forward to hear from you. Good luck :)

  • There are a number of options after 10th and +2. You can choose engineering, medical, fashion designing, interior designing, exterior designing, aeronautics or anything else. It is better to take admission which you likes most or on the other way which you want to make your career. Though i am a fashion design professional i will suggest for fashion design. There are a number of renowned fashion design colleges in Orissa who can provide you better teaching and after completing fashion design courses you will definitely got a job with a good remuneration otherwise you can start your own boutique. Fashion design is in high demand now and you will get better path in the near future. By the way thanks a lot for such a nice and informative information. I appreciate a lot for your blogging effort.

    • I am not sure about medical streams. After diploma you will be enrolling into 2nd year of graduation directly as a Lateral Joinee. You can check if any medical college allows lateral entries. Also in diploma, you will not have Bio subjects, only PCM and English will be there for 1st year. In 2nd year, you will be moved to stream what you have selected for doing diploma in.
