10 Lessons Bloggers Can Learn From Game Of Thrones

Game Of Thrones (GOT) is, undoubtedly, one of the most popular television series. The series just concluded its sixth season in June 2016 and the internet got filled with its memes and scenes throughout the season. This series is based on the battle of ‘Iron Throne’. There are lots of lessons people can learn from this series. It may look a bit dramatic but I have picked a few of the lessons that bloggers can learn from Game Of Thrones and can apply. If you have watched GOT, you can relate to all the points below. Brace yourselves ‘The Post Is Coming” 😉

10 Lessons Bloggers Can Learn From Game Of Thrones

Following are the famous GOT quotes that inspire us to give the best out of ourselves.

  1. The Man Who Passes The Sentence Should Swing The Sword – Ned Stark

Ned was one of the beloved characters of the GOT series. He always kept his honor, pride, and performed his duty. There was a scene from S01E01 when he passes the sentence to kill someone and then he himself killed him. It was to teach a lesson to his son Bran that a ruler who hides behind paid executioners soon forgets what death is. He taught us to lead by doing. This lesson holds for bloggers also. We should not give an order or make a decision we wouldn’t carry out ourselves. We should understand that we always have to remain loyal to our readers and subscribers. While writing any review post or sponsored post we should not promote any products if we have not used it or are unsatisfied with the product or services just for the sake of earning a few bucks. This is an important lesson that bloggers can learn from Game Of Thrones.

2. The things I do for love – Jaime Lannister

This was the quote from Jamie Lannister from S01E01. This was the moment when Bran Stark spotted Cersei and Jaime Lannister in the act. For this Jaime decides to solve the problem by pushing Bran from the Broken Tower regardless of what its outcome will be. Though this does not justify his doings, it gives us a message that it does not matter what others think about us. We should always do the things that we like and should always follow our passion and goals, no matter what people think.

3. Having Powerful Allies Will Bring You Success – Robert Baratheon

Game of Thrones is all about different houses trying to win the Iron Throne. To achieve this, Robert Baratheon had to get help from the powerful houses like Stark and Lannister. On the other hand, Jon Snow made a pact with the enemies (the wildlings) to fight against white-walkers and Bolton army later on. Remember – ‘Numbers always do not win battles, but loyalty and alliances can (another quote from GOT). Similarly, if you have to be successful in this blogging world, you will need to focus on alliances. Network with other bloggers in your niche. You can do guest blogging or join certain forums to connect with fellow bloggers. This is a mandatory thing to do! Use social media as much as you can. This is one of the most important lessons bloggers can learn from Game Of Thrones.

4. ‘We Go Forward. Only Forward’ – Stannis Baratheon

This was the quote from S05E07 when devoid Stannis marches his army towards Winterfell. Though Davos Seaworth thinks it is not a good option considering an increase in the severity of winter. But Stannis does not listen to this and says, ‘’He will break before he bends. We go forward only forward”. It leaves a lesson that no matter what circumstances we are facing we should always look forward. The condition will never be perfect. Do the best we can with what we have. If you think of quitting in between, just think why you started it in the first place.

5. Knowledge Is Power – Petyr Baelish

This was a dialogue from Petyr Baelish a.k.a ‘Littlefinger’ to Cersei. He is one of the wittiest and clever characters from GOT series. He always surprised everyone with his clever plots. He teaches a valuable lesson about how knowing things can help us to survive in this competitive world. Similarly, it is mandatory for bloggers to understand know what readers need and what our niche businesses demand. The key point here is we should continue to learn new things and put our knowledge to good use.

 6. Every Hurt Is A Lesson, And Every Lesson Makes You Better – Arya Stark

Arya Stark is the youngest daughter of House Stark but is very brave. She teaches us to learn from past mistakes and be better for them. To err is human. We all make mistakes but what matters is that we should learn from them. She has also shown commitment by killing her enemies to avenge her family.  She teaches a lesson that we should never give up and should not stop until we reach our goal.

7. Lannisters Always Pay Their Debts – Tyrion Lannister

Game Of Thrones plot revolves around loyalty and promises and how they deliver these to their houses. It is shown in GOT that Lannisters always pay their debts. Similarly, If you are making promises to your readers and audience, you should definitely keep them like the Lannisters. Your brand should deliver all the things promised to the customers. This is another good lesson that bloggers can learn from Game Of Thrones.

8. A Smart Commander Does Not Abandon A Defensive Advantage – Roose Bolton

This is a perfect quote to teach that no matter how confident you are about something but you should always have some defensive approach. So, never put all your eggs in one basket. It is better to have a different source of incomes with different options. We never know what tomorrow will hold and when we might need the other options also to carry on.

9. What We Do Not Know Is What Usually Gets Us Killed – Petyr Baelish

What I like most about ‘Littlefinger’(Petyr Baelish) are his wittiness and tactics he had shown at different phases of the series. This quote gives us a message that we should be very cautious on which we are working including what other options we can try and what our competitors are doing. There is a lot you can learn from your competitors. If we overlook these things we cannot be successful. There is no harm in monitoring competitors’ analytics. If we know what they are doing, then we are always one step ahead.  Then we can find ways on how to outwork our competitors.  The game of the throne is played with swords and shields, but also with strategy and analysis.

It also reminds me of the fight between Oberyn Martell and The Mountain where Oberyn was almost about to win and could have killed Mountain. But he wanted Mountain to confess his crimes thinking he won’t be able to get up now but Mountain hit back and which got Martell killed.

10. Power Resides Where Men Believe It Resides. A Small Man Can Cast A Very Large Shadow – Lord Varys

This is a scene when Varys first arrives at King’s Landing and tries to warn Tyrion to learn to play the game and not get played. He wished for Tyrion to quickly identify who the pawns and pieces are, and who his potential friends and foes are.  After Tyrion asked if power is a  mummer’s trick. “A shadow on the wall,” Varys murmured, “yet shadows can kill. And ofttimes a very small man can cast a very large shadow.

This teaches us that size does not matter. Anyone can do a big task. Similarly, you (or any action was taken by you) can also do something which is unimaginative. Never underestimate anything. A single well-written blog post can do wonder for you. Sometimes, it is the people no one imagines anything of who do the things that no one can imagine. Also, Who knew Sam could have killed white-walker :p 🙂

That’s all in this article. These were the different lessons bloggers can learn from Game Of Thrones. ‘My Post Is Ended’ here. What are the other lessons that bloggers can learn from Game Of Thrones? Do share your feedback in the comment section below.

  • I am not in the perfect state of mind now. I have observed that my blog has taken a slide in performance and is losing ranks. I was thinking of giving up. But after reading your post, I want to carry on the fight. It is really motivating.

  • Hi there Mohit,

Truth to be spoken I wasn't a huge fan of the show Game of Thrones, I liked it more Breaking Bad, Walking Dead. But after you described GOT in this way, I truly will start to watch it, because as far as I can see it can help me a lot.

    Cheers,

    Clay Smith.
