Raipur: India’s medium pacer Praveen Kumar has been declared mentally unfit for using abusive language against his opponent. Match referee in his report claims that Praveen Kumar is mentally unfit.
It is not the first time that Praveen has been involved in such controversy. In 2008, he allegedly thrashed a doctor in Meerut. In 2011 during the West Indies, he was involved in a fracas with a spectator and did the same during the England tour during a tour game against Northants.
The incident happened during a Corporate Trophy game in Raipur between Income Tax and ONGC on Monday. Bowling to Income Tax batsman Ajitesh Argal, Praveen sent down a short ball. Believing that he had already bowled two bouncers in the over, Argal asked the umpire why he hadn’t called a no-ball.
According to a report, the abusive words dictated by Praveen Kumar were- ‘M******** tu batting kar, umpiring maat kar (you just bat, don’t have to be an umpire)’.
“When ordered to stop it, he repeated, ‘Woh m******** batting kyon nahin karta (why doesn’t he simply bat?)’”
On-field umpires Kamlesh Sharma and Ajit Datar reported the incident to match referee Dhananjay Singh. It is reliably learnt that Singh wrote to the BCCI, describing Praveen as “mentally unfit”.
However, Kumar defended himself responding to a text message from Headlines Today, denying any wrong doing and claiming that there was not much in the incident.
Praveen’s brother, Vinay, however hit back at the match referee and said that he had no business calling him mentally unfit if he is not a doctor.
“We are yet to read the report, and can’t say anything yet. He has already pleaded guilty and been charged,” a BCCI official said. He has been charged with level-2 and level-4 offences
When asked whether any action would be taken against Praveen, BCCI’s chief administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty said it is an internal matter of the board.
