Miss China Yu Wenxia, won the coveted title of Miss World on Saturday during final held in a mining city on the edge of the Gobi desert. The mostly Chinese audience erupted in cheers and fireworks lit up the sky when it was announced that the home candidate, Yu Wenxia, had been awarded the title. She became China’s second Miss World winner.
Yu beat out 115 contestants, a record, in the highly publicized annual international beauty pageant. China also won the Miss World title in 2007, when model Zhang Zilin took the crown.
“When I was young I felt very lucky because so many people helped me, and I hope in the future I can help more children to feel lucky.” Yu, said.
Yu, a 23-year-old aspiring music teacher, appeared on stage in a dazzling array of ballgowns during the two-hour final and serenaded the audience with a piercing rendition of a popular Chinese song.
Sophie Moulds, a 19-year-old business student from Wales, took second place. Jessica Kahawaty, 23, a law student from Australia, was third. India’s contender Vanya Mishra could only make it to the top seven. Her dance to the track ‘Dil cheez kya hai’ from the 1981 film “Umrao Jaan” in the semi-finals gave her a place among the top seven finalists.
Mishra was being touted as one of the probable winners and was expected to bring back the title home after a gap of more than a decade. Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra last won the title for India in 2000. Though Mishra didn’t make it beyond top seven, she got the titles of ‘Miss Social Media’ and ‘Beauty with a Purpose’.
